Democracy's High Ceiling

They built us a roofless house
our leaders called it national unity,
so that it fell upon each of us
to supply the meat and bone

The statue was toppled

its dust remaining beneath our feet

we ran onwards-

 indifferent

to who would patch up our days.

They built us a roofless house

our leaders called it national unity,

so that it fell upon each of us

to supply the meat and bone

They built us a roofless house

our leaders called it national unity,

so that it fell upon each of us

to supply the meat and bone

needed to construct the house

We used to watch:

the gunfire

the stars fertile and crowding in a village’s night,

forgetting, by early morning,

our own breaking news—

for the names of the dead already

compete with every other headline in the papers.

Then it was decided that a roof

should be raised over our national unity,

and so they invented the quota system,

meaning for each of us to arrive

carrying his own stone

Whenever conflict flared,

the builders hurled those very stones at one another,

we would bleed

only from our foreheads.

The quota system failed,

the builders discovered, too late,

the technocrats’ tale

less than four years later, the builders realized that

ceilings cannot be built by independent ministers

who fail to grasp the true worth of blood and stone.

No soon that the page had turned another one opened—

a page on honor, ours one we had guarded against them,

or against their comrades hiding backstage

in a bitter, historic moment.

So they agreed that this time the roof will be raised

with the very hands that had once carried weapons.

It was evident, weapons were not enough.

Another curious tale caught on one that circulated

that weapons are only confined to the state’s hand

But since the state is merely a legal persona

possessing no tangible hand of its own,

the file was closed for lack of evidence.

Others, however,

believed the commotion might pass

if only the word confining was replaced

with the word disarming

We imagined a state disarmed,

or its hands tied.

All the while, the house stood without a roof—

or perhaps there was a roof we simply could not see.

So it was said: this democracy’s ceiling

its ceiling was so high we couldn’t see it at all,

we could barely recognize the builders

waving down to us

 from up high.

4.The poet is invoking The Al-Aimma Bridge Tragedy (2005): On 31 August 2005, during a major Shiite pilgrimage in Baghdad commemorating Imam Musa al-Kadhim, panic spread among thousands of pilgrims crossing Al-Aimma Bridge after rumours of an imminent suicide attack. The resulting stampede caused many people to fall from the bridge into the Tigris River, while others were crushed in the crowd. More than 900 people lost their lives, making it one of the deadliest civilian disasters in modern Iraqi history. The tragedy has remained deeply embedded in Iraq's collective memory and is often invoked in literature and poetry as a symbol of grief, vulnerability, and the human cost of years of violence and instability.

5. A reference to The Speicher Massacre: In June 2014, following the fall of Tikrit to ISIS, approximately 1,700 unarmed military cadets were captured and murdered in one of the most devastating massacres in contemporary Iraqi history. The event left a deep scar on Iraq's collective consciousness and has since become a recurring symbol of loss, mourning, and the human cost of war and extremism.
